Day of the Dead Photography:

In the Aztec Solar Calendar, the Day of the Dead was celebrated  in the beginning of August towards the end of the month in Mexico,Now it is celebrated in Oct. in Mexico and in certain parts of the United States and Central America to coincide with Halloween. The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations kept skulls to symbolize death and rebirth.  These skulls were used to honor their dead. It was  believed their spirits came back to visit during the month long ritual. These indigenous people of Mexico  had been practicing The Day of the Dead for at least 3,000 years!  A ritual the Spaniards would try unsuccessfully try  to eradicate.Remarkably, the indigenous people of Mexico did not separate death from pain, or wealth from poverty like in today's Western cultures. Surprisingly in such a stark contrast, Western society's  Halloween is a day to fear death, spirits and the darkness while in Mexico it is welcomed with open arms and celebrated with food, music, and brightly colored flowers. In these photos Katya captures me in full regalia with her camera and quiet sensitivity for altering the lighting for that perfect Dia De Los Muertos mood. I had lot's of fun creating these photos with her!! Check out more of her works at :

My First Drawing

I can recall my first drawing ever, and the entire process of drawing it. My sister who was 5 at the time came rushing in the front door, with a look of glimmer in her eyes the way a hero saunters into a saloon in a western film....door slamming behind her. I look up, 4 years old laying on my belly on the living room floor and playing with lincoln logs. She says she learned something really neat at school and does not wait for me to give my reactionary approval  as she scoots next to me on the floor and shoves a pencil in my hand and a puts paper on the floor. She asks that I follow what she draws on paper, I don't question...I just do it. Before I know it, I have this kick ass horse on paper. A freaking HORSE!! I do it again, this time I add more flair...I give the horse a horn and it's a Unicorn!! The hell with it, let's go all the way, because I am gangster like that....and I gave it wings too. My lincoln logs now become a distant memory and I embrace this new capability. It's a power trip really. To take a blank page and create something out of nothing was almost like magic to me.

NYC's Arcadia Gallery curates Flora Abunda

A top favorite art gallery of mine, Arcadia  will be showcasing a themed art show. A first for the gallery since it's inception in 1998. This very special exhibition  features a great selection of  their artists making work that references flowers in some form or fashion. If you enjoy walking the streets of Soho  be sure to stop by.  This is a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon but make sure to pick up an iced coffee at Milux Cafe on Wooster street and then go gallery hopping to your heart's content.
